Hi MonaThe area covered will depend on the size of shorts but I can tell you there are 4 battens in each leg and these are covered in foam.The padding on our shorts is quite thin compared to others so they are less likely to catch as you move about on the boat, this is especially noticeable when sailing boats with this gunwales like Mirror Cadet or Optimist but probably not so noticeable on a Topper or Laser.The shorts also fall to the back of the knee so if you drop knee hike you still get some benefit and again as you transition from there into a normal hiking position the shorts don't catch as you do soI hope that helpsDavid

Hi Sarah, Yes and I don't like sailing my Mirror without mine on. The shorts make the gunwales much more bearable and they are long enough not to 'hook' under the gunwale if you hike too far out or drop knee hike. Regards David
