Hi Geoff I would replace the ropes as rope technology has moved on greatly since and the new sheets will be much nicer to use and new halyards would be more reliable, who knows how good the old halyards are under load now? When they introduced jib cleats a fairlead and cleat was mounted on the fairlead block on the gunwale, the fairlead and cleat then moved onto the side deck either on a block of wood or with a block of wood fitted under the deck for strength. The move to the side tank was to help the boat go closer to the wind and soon there was a move to mounting them on the thwart, sail shape has changed to suit the move with the most obvious change is the clew is much lower.
